After owning the land for 15 years, planning the right design for many of those, and actually building for over 2 years, we have finally completed Oran na Mara.
The rush to the finish was exhausting for everyone concerned, with the usual delays, wrong deliveries and technical challenges that are common to building a house, but made much more complex for a house with no square walls on an offshore island!
The building team led by Kenny MacKay were incredible, Jane our interior designer spent weeks in a boiler suit sleeping on a blow-up bed, Jason the sparky worked tirelessly to get the flipping lights to work, Neil landscaped, Angus and his team completed the walls, and a team of willing (or crazy!) helpers descended on the house to clean it and make it ready.
Even then we didn't quite make it - our first guests were greeted with a digger, a dumper truck, a welfare cabin and about seven vans. But they were lovely, and after a few nights elsewhere they got to enjoy a pristine Oran na Mara.
Now, at long last, we can see what we have all created - a simply beautiful house with absolutely stunning views of one of the most beautiful places in the world. We are all proud of the result, and look forward to sharing it with our friends, as well as to retiring here when family life permits. Time for a glass of wine ...
