The Living Area

Wake up to an unspoilt paradise

Oran Na Mara combines tradition with the ultimate in modern luxury

Plan your escape

The huge living area with high domed ceiling comprises the kitchen, dining area, cosy "snug", and sitting area. Everything you need for your coastal retreat here in Scotland. This is a wonderful social space, with plenty of room to relax, eat, or even watch the satellite TV which rises upon a lift mechanism so that it doesn't interrupt your coastal views when it is not in use. Even the window blinds are completely hidden when not in use - this in itself was a feat of engineering, but important to avoid any form of interruption to those incredible 5 star views of the beaches of Isle of Harris .

The huge floor to ceiling windows look out in different directions - to the South is the village of Scarista and the valley revealing the islands in the Sound of Harris, to the West is the vast and beautiful Scarista beach and the majestic Toe Head, while to the North West is Taransay island and the stunning north Harris hills. The cottages position really lets you see the best of Scotland . The sunsets are visible from the luxury cottage during most of the year, with the light creating constant and vivid colour changes in the sea and sky. The colours of the sea from Oran na Mara have to be seen to be believed!

Music fills the cottage if you use the superb inbuilt Sonos system from your smartphone or tablet, playing your favourites in surround sound. We have found that the acoustics are excellent with the high domed ceilings.

Even if the Hebridean weather is wild, this luxury cottage is designed as an elevated viewing area to watch the constantly changing scene in the great outdoors, while you relax with a book and a coffee (or wine!), a perfect retreat.

The glass dining table is set above a 1,000 year old wood base, giving the impression of viewing through the sea surface.  The views from the expansive living area are simply stunning

The bespoke sofas form a curve as a social space or a TV viewing area, with the Smart TV rising from the surface of the snug so that, when out of use, it does not interrupt views across the room.  The large picture is "Before Rain" by Dudley Williams - we noticed that the weather outside reflects on the picture inside!

The kitchen is fully-equipped with professional-standard equipment.  The worktop is made from recycled glass.  The cooker is by Rangemaster.  A Nespresso coffee machine, microwave, fridge, freezer and Panasonic Breadmaker are available.  But with a view straight to Scarista beach and  the Atlantic, you might be distracted from your cooking! Underfloor heating keeps your toes cosy.

The "snug" focuses on a large-windowed wood and peat stove, for cosy days or nights.  The upright snug windows are inspired by those at the ruined temple on the Northton headland, and reveal the white sands and turquoise sea of Scarista beach.

The lounge area, as well as the whole house, has superb views to the beaches, ocean, islands and sunsets.  The blinds on the huge windows were carefully designed to be completely hidden when not in use, and the Smart TV rises on a lift so it doesn't interrupt the incredible views in the daytime
